New Print: Under the Dome
I’m so excited to have this piece printed and added to my shop. It’s been a true labor of love, and I do love it! So a little back story…
A couple months ago I saw an image of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha on Instagram, and I was immediately in awe. It had all the things I love - soft organic shapes and sharp geometric lines. A lush tropical garden sits below a dome of hundreds of tiny triangles.
I immediately knew I had to make a print inspired by this majestic place.
So I got to sketching. For the dome I created a grid in Adobe Illustrator to make sure it maintained the perspective and depth. I then used my trusty carbon paper to trace the dome onto the block, line by line. Then for the foliage below, I free handed it, pulling inspiration from all the tropical plants I see on my daily walks in New Orleans - including palm trees, birds or paradise, elephant ears, and more.
It took a lot of carving., and if you were following along on Instagram, you saw my many “death by triangles” moments where it seemed like there was no end to the dome. But I love tedious carving. It’s meditative in a way - giving me some time to turn my brain off and focus on what is in front of me. Turned out there were 454 triangles in total (yes, I counted!) And I absolutely loved how the plants turned out!
And now Under the Dome is available! This is the largest piece I’ve done in a while - the print size is 12 x 16 inches, paper size 15 x 19 1/2 inches, and is hand printed in black Cranfield ink on deckle edge mouldmade French cotton paper. This is a limited edition of only 25 prints to maintain collector value.
